This week: Behind the badge Eric murphy

Lieutenant Eric Murphy, Nye County Sheriff’s Office

Eric Murphy, a Lieutenant for the Nye County Sheriff’s Office is a fan favorite among “On Patrol LIVE” viewers. Murphy, was also featured on “Live PD” and “American Sheriff Network”. Eric also ran for Sheriff of Nye County last year but was unsuccessful in his bid. Despite this he still fights every day to protect his community in Nye County that he has been a part of for nearly 44 years. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Eric Murphy and having him be our inaugural “This Week: Behind The Badge” featured officer. Here is our interview:

*bold is me, plain is Lieutenant Murphy*

Thanks for doing this interview with me!

Absolutely! Thanks for having me.

What agency are you currently with for people who don’t know and how long have you been with them?

I have been with the Nye County Sheriff’s Office for 20 years. I have been a K-9 Deputy, Detective, Sergeant, and now Lieutenant.

Have you ever been with an agency other than Nye?

I have not.

Why did you become a law enforcement officer?

I was a Firefighter and wanted to make a change. I thought that law enforcement would be fun and decided to go for it.

Was law enforcement your first career choice?

No. It was not.

What was?

Being a Firefighter was my first career choice and something I strived to become.

What TV shows do you like?

Back in the day I really like “COPS” now I like “On Patrol LIVE”.

What movies do you like?

My favorite movie is Top Gun.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love to go camping and fishing.

Where is your dream vacation spot?

My dream vacation is to go and visit Hawaii.

What is the hardest part of the job for you?

Having to inform people that they have lost a loved one. The worst part of this job for me is dealing with people who have just lost someone they love.

How do you balance what you see and deal with at work to when you come home?

I think just talking about it is so important. Talking about it with my wife each night is crucial. It helps release the stress for me.

What advice would you give for someone who is interested in a career in law enforcement?

It is a hard job. But, it is truly the best job in the world in my opinion.

What is your most memorable case or call that you have worked on?

I worked a homicide case when I was a Detective and got a full conviction on the suspect. This made me feel great as I got closure for the family and it felt great that all of my work paid off.

Do you like the cameras being around you?

Yes. I do.

How long did it take you to get used to them?

It was pretty easy for me to get used too. I got used to them right away.

Which fellow officer at Nye County Sheriff’s Office do you work with the most?

As a Lieutenant, I work with all of our officers. I don’t even really work with any more than others.

If you could work at any other agency that has been featured on “On Patrol LIVE” which would it be and why?

I like Richland, they are a very busy agency and I truly like that.

If you could choose any law enforcement agency and any unit to be apart of in this world, which agency and unit would you choose?

I always thought that working for the Secret Service would be cool. You get to protect important people, like the President of the United States and the places that you get to see would be pretty neat.

Thanks for doing this interview Lieutenant! My next interview is with former Beech Grove Police Officer, current Lawrence Police Officer Kelsey Gembala who has been featured on the show as well. What is something you would like to learn about her?

This has been an absolute pleasure. I would like to know what Kelsey likes most about this job.
